This count was published for the first time in the following
book by José de la Torre:

By a typo mistake the second name of José (Pepe) Sousa is misspelled
as "Souza" in the above ad.

This count is best done with new cards or with not too used cards.
The idea of this count is to count four cards as if they were only three.
1.- Hold four cards at the tip of your left finger as in Fig.
1. The cards should be parallel to the floor.

2. Applying some pressure, the thumb pushes the three top cards to the right as in Fig. 2. As the thumb moves to the right, the flesh of the thumb (touching the edges of the cards) hold the three top cards together.
Fig. 2

3.- Slightly releasing the pressure, the thumb slides the top card up. The two cards in the middle will remain squared as one card. See Fig. 3. It is very important to release the pressure on the top card as much as you can while you slide the top card to the front.

4.- Now, if you want, you can show the other side of the
three (actually four cards) cards by turning your hand over, then turn your hand
back to the original position.
5.- With your right hand take out the middle card (really two cards as one) as you
count “one”. With your right hand take the top card placing it on top of the former
middle card(s). Take the remaining card from your left hand and place it on top of
the cards already in your right hand. As you take the last two cards, you may count
“two”, and “three”.
"This count was given to me by a very good magician, José Sousa,
who lives in Puerto Rico. By the way, he is Cuban, like me!" José de
la Torre.

EFFECT: A card signed by a spectator is placed inside a wallet. The wallet
is placed on the table. Before placing the selected and signed card in the wallet
the magician places the rest of the deck in its case and gives it to the spectator
instructing him to place it in its pocket. The signed card disappears from the wallet
and it is found in the middle of the deck that the spectator has in his pocket!
NEEDED:
1) A regular deck of cards, and a duplicate of one of the cards (for
explanation purposes lets assume the card & duplicate of it are the 8D).
2) You also need a double back (same color both sides) to match the color of the
deck.
3) A Himber wallet.
PREPARATION:
Place the deck face down, make the 8D the first card on top. Fake a
signature on the back of the 8D in a fancy, unreadable way. Place the
double back card on top of it. Place the duplicate 8D face down on top of the double
back.
Prepare your Himber wallet so it has the same things on both sides of the wallet
(bills, cards, what have you), so that it will look the same if you open it on side
“A” or on side “B”.
PRESENTATION:
Introduce the deck of cards, fan it faces toward the audience to show it is not in
any particular order. False shuffle the deck (not disturbing the top 3 cards). Have
a spectator come to your right side and force him (your favorite method) the duplicate
8D. Have him show it to the audience, then have him place it face down on top of
the deck. Bring out a pen (same one you used to fake the signature on the duplicate
8D) and ask him to sign his card on the back.
Once signed, make a triple lift so the face of the faked signed 8D shows on top.
Take it out and leave it face up on the table. Cut the deck and place it back in
its box. Give the box to the spectator and tell him to keep it in his pocket. Ask
for a second assistant and place him at your left. Bring out your Himber wallet and
open it showing side “A”. Take the 8D that is face up on the table, and show the
signature (fake signature) on the back of the card to spectator number two, saying:
“The card is signed, right?” He will agree. No way he can know that the signature
he is seeing is the faked one as long as he has no idea of how the other spectator
signs! Show the faked signature to the audience, face of the card toward spectator
number one who selected it. Ask him:
“That is your card, sir? Good!” Place the “selected” card (actually the duplicate
with the fake signature on it) into side “A” of the Himber wallet and close it. Place
the Himber wallet on the table, side “B” on top.
Address spectator number one saying:
“If I don't make your signed card jump out of that wallet by itself I'll give you
$20. Watch!” Make some hocus-pocus trying to make the card jump out of the wallet,
of course, nothing happens. Act frustrated and open the
wallet (side B). The card is gone! But, where is it? Ask the spectator number one
to bring out the box he has in his pocket with the deck inside and hand it to you.
Take the deck out of the box, ribbon spread the cards face up on the table. The selected
card, signature on back, is face down on the deck! The card has magically jumped
from the wallet into the deck that the spectator was holding in his pocket all the
time! Turn the card over to see its face. It is the selected card! Give him the signed
card as a token.
What make this one a killer is that the “signed” card is in full view long after
the spectator has placed the complete deck of cards in his pocket.
